If you’re like me, the term ‘business plan’ brings to mind pages and pages of boring text, endless graphs and charts and mind-numbing statistics. Everyone said it’s important and you’re dreading the day that someone asks you for one or worse, you realize you need a loan from the bank and have to face it again.  It could be the single most boring thing on the planet, and if you’re like me you either skipped that torture entirely or have a half-finished document saved in an unnamed folder on your hard drive you try to ignore so you won’t feel guilty about it.

While I can’t guarantee you won’t ever have to someday face that dreaded business plan (or at least hire someone to face it for you) I can cheerfully tell you that there is an alternative that is just as, if not more, effective as a stiff, traditional business plan, and about twenty times more fun.

The SASSy Business Plan

How much more motivated would you be on a daily basis if you had a bright, colorful business plan sitting on a wall in your home office or kitchen full of all the things that make you excited to get to work? What would that kind of drive do to your business?

The bright, motivational business plan I’m talking about is what is commonly referred to as a vision board. You collect and arrange images that represent what you want to achieve in your life and business and place it somewhere you can always see it. It will act as a constant reminder of what you need to do in order to see your dreams fulfilled. You can place quotes and aspirations that speak to you on it and instead of having to go on a hunt through google when you’re in a rough patch, you can see the quotes while you work and use them to push you further.

Maybe you want to spend more time with your kids or take your spouse on another honeymoon. Maybe you want to finally hit the six-figure mark in your business or sell out a conference room for an event. Maybe you want to stop paying rent and move to a house in the suburbs without a mortgage. You wouldn’t find any of these things on a traditional business plan, true, but the fact is you’re not a traditional business. Because they speak to you and are a part of where you want to go in life, they are things you need to focus on to help you achieve them.

Focusing on your end goal is critical to long-term success and achieving that end goal. As humans, we have to be reminded of why we’re doing what we’re doing, and a vision board is a perfect, personal reminder.

Why SASSy Vision Boards Work

Traditional business plans are all about money. How much you need, how much you’re going to spend, how much you’re going to make, what you’re going to do with the rest. As womenpreneurs we have money needs, but we’re not driven by money. We’re driven by security, yes, but not money. We’re driven by the desire to give our kids a better life than we had, yes, but not money by itself. We have needs that need to be fulfilled by the money we want to make, yes, but when we focus more on the money than the dream we become disconnected and our businesses become a second job that’s more stressful than the one we walked away from.

SASSy Vision boards work because they put the focus back on the dream and allow you to see the steps to get there. Focusing on the dream allows you to focus on the things you enjoy, which may seem unrealistic and woo-woo at first because we were raised with the idea that making money could not be fun. That’s simply not true.

Focusing on the things you enjoy causes you to be more productive. Some of the most successful people in the world have uses SASSy vision boards to get clear on what they wanted and chart the steps to get there. That’s exactly why these kinds of vision boards work.

SASSy vision boards are Strategic, Actionable, Signature and Systematic. They’re more than a bunch of pictures glued to cardboard. They are crafted strategically, outline actionable, progressive steps that are unique to you and show you the systems needed to achieve your goals. The images that represent what you want are placed and arranged in a manner that outlines a path for you to take and places your ultimate goal at the forefront to keep you grounded and focused on what you want to achieve.

SASSy vision boards work because they give your brain the two things it needs to guide you toward success: images and a map.

Those images keep your mind aware of what you’re working on and why and help to draw connections between where you are now and your next steps, which can be a motivator more powerful than 24 full hours of motivational videos on Youtube.

Sure, no banker is going to accept your vision board as a viable business plan, but that’s their loss. When it comes to getting clear on what you really want, charting the course to get there and getting excited about your business again, you can’t go wrong with a SASSy vision board. If your banker knew about them, he’d agree.
